Four Kinds of Music to Help You De-Stress

Four Kinds of Music to Help You De-Stress

Music has a profound impact on our body and emotions and is known to be an excellent de-stressor. Research has found that music that is around 60 beats per minute (BPM) can cause the brain to synchronize with our heartbeat causing alpha brain waves (frequencies from 8-14 hertz). These alpha brain waves are present when we are relaxed and in a conscious state. Music also helps in lowering blood pressure and decreasing the levels of stress hormones.

Soothing music like Indian stringed instruments, light jazz, or even the sound of rain relaxes our body and mind. It has the power to absorb our attention, act as a distraction, and help us dig deeper into our emotions.

Here are four kinds of music that will help you de-stress:

  1. Classical Music

This kind of music is extremely soothing and it helps you be more aware of your emotions. During a stressful situation, take a 10-minute break and listen to some classical music. This can help you clear your head as well as respond to a situation rather than react to it.

  1. Smooth Jazz

This music has a little more flare to it than classical music, but it can be very relaxing.  However, jazz music is often an acquired taste so if you’ve not heard some good smooth jazz, this is a good time to try it out.

  1. Nature Sounds

A walk through the woods, the sound of rain, or waves crashing against the shore are some natural sounds that help the mind relax. These sounds combined with a soft instrumental track are widely used to meditate, calm down, and even help people fall asleep.

  1. Your Favorite Song

Listening to some of your favorite songs when you are in a stressful situation can help change your mood to a happier one. Make a playlist of all your favorite songs, and you can use it as your go-to playlist when you want to calm yourself down.

Music is a great de-stressor to help tide you through your stressful situations, but it’s not a solution to help you cope with stress.
